Konrad Adenauer Synergy Project
Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security: Lessons from the Pivotal Decade of the 1990s
The Konrad Adenauer Synergy Research Project of the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL) at the University of Cologne and Nuffield College at the University of Oxford examines how the history of the 1990s has shaped today’s world order. At its core are the “long 1990s” as a period of transformation, interventions, and the search for new norms, whose impact continues to the present day.
The close cooperation between Cologne and Oxford creates a productive synergy, bringing together complementary expertise and diverse international perspectives into a historically grounded approach with strong contemporary relevance for global governance. The project is supported by an international advisory board composed of representatives from politics and international organisations, fostering an ongoing exchange between academia and practice.
Thanks to the support of the Alfred Landecker Foundation, the project represents internationally connected, cutting-edge research that opens new horizons and provides impulses for addressing the global challenges of the present.
Principal Investigators
Prof. Dr. Fabian Klose
Professor Fabian Klose is CHL director and holds the Chair of International History and Historical Peace and Conflict Research (19th and 20th centuries) at the University of Cologne. At the CHL, he leads the Konrad Adenauer Synergy Project.
Prof. Dr. Andrew Thompson
Professor Andrew Thompson holds the Chair of Global and Imperial History at the University of Oxford and is Co-Director of the Oxford Centre for Global History. He served as Chief Executive of the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council. At Nuffield College, he leads the Konrad Adenauer Synergy Project.
